Everywhere in the world, art and culture are being used to create space for people to engage in public dialogue and to try to build this feeling of belonging. It is very important, especially for community revitalization, to increase civic activism and break civic apathy. That’s what we created our project space for.
Ajete Kërqeli is the co-founder of Shtatëmbëdhjetë, a project space in Prishtina Kosovo that Kërqeli opened with friend Nita Zeqiri in early 2019. Their mission with Shtatëmbëdhjetë is to provide a free and nurturing space for young people in Prishtina to go to work, hang out and engage in open discussion around ‘taboo’ topics, which otherwise go unaddressed. At the core of Shtatëmbëdhjetë is the belief that art can be used to increase civic awareness and activism, and motivate social change.
