I get a lot of positive comments about my work, but there are also lots of people who say the portraits of the Roma women look sad. Roma women have been forced into early marriages, some have been sold to their husbands. In my portraits, I want to show the emotion.
Farija Mehmeti is painter, whose work primarily centers around intricate potraits of Romani woman. Mehmeti, who was inspired to begin painting after seeing her brother’s paintings depicting scenes of Roma life, uses her paintings to showcase traditional Roma dress and promote conversation about Roma culture. “God gave me this talent,” said Mehmeti, who hopes to encourage other Roma women to take part in artistic expression.
