Executive Director, Kosova Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims
It (International Women of Courage Award) was recognition for survivors of sexual violence. Having such an award from a state department... it means that the world is acknowledging that in Kosovo there are 20,000 survivors of sexual violence. Survivors need to be known. They need to be heard.
Feride Rushiti was finishing medical training in Albania in the 90’s as war began in Kosovo, resulting in an influx of refugees and a great need for psycho-social support among those escaping trauma. She began volunteering as a student, and after the war subsided, she returned home to Kosovo and established the Kosova Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims, through which she has supported hundreds of survivors of war-time sexual violence. In 2018, Rushiti was honored with the International Women of Courage Award for her continued work.
