Mirishahe Syla was born and raised in Lipjan. Growing up in a small village, Syla became interested in the extreme differences she noticed in the perception of the progression of women’s rights in Prishtina compared to that elsewhere in Kosovo. Syla earned a masters in women’s and gender studies from the University of Northern Iowa. During her studies, she worked as a research assistant at the Center for Violence Prevention. Upon her return to Kosovo, she began advocating for the inclusion and support of rural women, whose needs, she said, are often overlooked by feminists in urban areas.
